Executive Summary:
Dr. Chun-Hing Yiu graduated from the School of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taiwan in 1976. He received his residency training at the Department of Medicine and the Department of Neuropsychiatry at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH), Taiwan. He became an attending neurologist there.
In 1984, he was accepted as a clinical and research fellow by the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, Canada, where he learned advanced treatment strategies for epilepsy, especially the techniques in the identification of the epileptogenic zone. Dr. Yiu developed and implemented the first multidisciplinary comprehensive epilepsy team and the first Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) in Taiwan at the TVGH in 1986. The team started the Epilepsy Surgery Program since 1987. It opened a modern era in the treatment of refractory epilepsy in Taiwan. Thenceforth the team keeps a leading position in the management of epilepsy in this country.
Dr. Yiu used to be a Clinical Professor of Neurology at the National Yang Ming University and the National Medical Defence University for decades. He was the President of the Taiwan Epilepsy Society (TEA) between the years of 1998 and 2001. He was also one of the conveners of the "Standard Chinese Translation of Epilepsy and Electroencephalography Terms" task force, committing to reach consensus on terminology used by the global Chinese medical community.
Currently, he is a Clinical Professor of Neurology at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and an Honorary Director of the TEA.
